- <p> DIED. VITAS GERULAITIS, 40, former tennis star; of carbon-monoxide
- poisoning; in Southampton, New York. Deadly fumes from a defective
- heater brought an abrupt end to the life of the Brooklyn-born
- court star, once ranked No. 3 in the world. Lacking the thermonuclear
- swings of contemporaries like Bjorn Borg or Jimmy Connors, the
- golden-maned Gerulaitis based his game on court-sweeping speed
- and the sniper-like accuracy of his shots, an arsenal that earned
- him a Top 10 ranking from 1977 to 1982. Gerulaitis might have
- done better still but for the toll taken by his off-court passion
- for party going, the "Broadway Vitas" life-style that ultimately
- had him seeking drug treatment. His death cut short a new career
- as a TV sports analyst.
