  15. <p>     DIED. VITAS GERULAITIS, 40, former tennis star; of carbon-monoxide
  16. poisoning; in Southampton, New York. Deadly fumes from a defective
  17. heater brought an abrupt end to the life of the Brooklyn-born
  18. court star, once ranked No. 3 in the world. Lacking the thermonuclear
  19. swings of contemporaries like Bjorn Borg or Jimmy Connors, the
  20. golden-maned Gerulaitis based his game on court-sweeping speed
  21. and the sniper-like accuracy of his shots, an arsenal that earned
  22. him a Top 10 ranking from 1977 to 1982. Gerulaitis might have
  23. done better still but for the toll taken by his off-court passion
  24. for party going, the "Broadway Vitas" life-style that ultimately
  25. had him seeking drug treatment. His death cut short a new career
  26. as a TV sports analyst.
